In 1981, Karl-Heinz Hütten and a fellow student from the Fachhochschule für Elektrotechnik (Technical College of Electrical Engineering) in Krefeld founded C.O.P Computer Organisation und Programmierung GmbH. The company, which had initially been intended as a sideline to help the students earn some extra money, grew quickly. As early as during the 1980s, the Krefeld-based company successfully wrote its first industry software for a timber merchant – using a Commodore desktop computer. In 1993, the company was one of the first to develop software that was based purely on Windows.
Just a short time later, it switched the basis for its timber industry software to the NAVISION ERP solution, thereby integrating financial accounting and enterprise resource planning for the first time. In 2001, C.O.P Computer GmbH and Software IN·TAKT GmbH, founded in 1994 by the current Chairman of the acadon Board of Management, Klaus Fander, merged with Erftstadt-based company K&H Förster GmbH to form acadon AG. The company expanded further, establishing foreign subsidiaries in Switzerland and Austria and expanding its operations in the Netherlands as well as founding branches in Braunschweig, Bremen and Dortmund. In 2022 acadon starts to open up new markets in France and Skandinavia.
